With county executive term limits on the ballot, County Executive Marc Elrich said he already is limited — “This is all about getting rid of me, and the Republicans knowing they can’t beat me in the general election, and so the next best thing is to make sure I can’t run again,” Elrich told MCM on Thursday. “It’s about as undemocratic as you can possibly be.”
According to Reardon Sullivan, Chair of the Committee for Better Government and former Republican candidate for county executive, out of all the signatures the committee gathered at random to get the question on the ballot, 62% were Democrats, 16% were Independents and 22% were Republicans — “The construct that term limits is a Republican plot doesn’t hold water,” he wrote to MCM. Nearly 16,000 of the more than 20,000 signatures submitted were validated by the county Board of Elections.
Sullivan previously told MCM: “Just like our president has two terms, our governor has two terms, so shouldn’t our county executive also have two terms?”
Currently, the Montgomery County Executive is limited to three four-year terms. A ballot (Question A) initiative lets voters choose if it should be reduced to two terms. Elrich is currently serving his second term after being reelected in 2022.
Thursday is the last day for early voting in Maryland.
